Navigational Practice Report
Written by Lindsay Farmer
The Barbados Rally Club held its 4th navigational
practice event on Saturday July 22nd, starting at 2pm from Vaucluse
Raceway, St. Thomas, which saw 12 crews travel northward through
St.Peter and St.Lucy before turning south to make their way to the
finish at the Clay Pigeon Club, near Searles, Christ Church around
8pm.Route setter Robin "Hippy" Hinds, with assistance from Mark and
Melanie Western, set the 6 hour route, using Tulip and BRC style
navigation, on paved roads, with a minimal section of track towards
the end.

Crews were allowed to take a third person in the event, to assist
with the navigation duties, or as an observer who was interested in
seeing first hand what navigational rallying is about. One such
observer, Anthony Seale-Mayers, stated at the end of the event, "I
would do another one so I can really get the hang of plotting on the
map. It was good man, those who have never done one should try it". |

Seale-Mayers teamed up with 2005 Novice Navigational Champions,
Curtis Greaves and Jamal Brathwaite, in a Mitsubishi Io, and placed
5th overall with 1450 penalty points. Tied for first place overall in the event were the father and
son team of Phillip and Dane McConney, with Anthony Whitehead and
Andrew Croney, both with 300 penalties. James Goddard and
Jeremy Croney completed the top three positions with 900 penalties. |
|
"To enter one, all
you need is the entry fee, your everyday vehicle, a valid drivers
license, and proof of standard road insurance, and off you go." |
Navigational Sub Committee Chairman, Lindsay Farmer, said "It's
good to see some new faces coming out for these navigational
practices, and having a good time. These events were designed to
teach the art of navigation to interested persons, in a fun, low
cost, non competitive environment. To enter one, all you need is
the entry fee, your everyday vehicle, a valid drivers license, and
proof of standard road insurance, and off you go." |
| Persons interested in entering a navigational practice will have
another chance this year, when the club holds the final one on
Saturday October 28th, and are advised to visit
www.rallynut.com
for online tutorials in the different forms of navigation used in
the events. |
